Match Report

Ally Donaldson was first in action as Hibs kicked off. He dealt confidently with a high cross from McBride as Marinello dashed in to connect. Dundee responded immediately and there was a moment of panic as Black desperately booted the ball clear with Wallace looking dangerous.

After this initial thrust by both sides, play tended to become bogged down as defences stood firm. In the 19th minute, however, Alec Bryce almost grabbed the lead. A low corner cross from Steele shot through the packed goalmouth. The ball ran to Alec, who volleyed first time. The shot hit Marshall on the chest, but he recovered to grab the ball.

Dundee gradually took command and Jim Steele made Marshall's hands tingle with a hard shot.

Bad luck for Hibs.

In the 26th minute full-back Jones was injured and carried off. Grant came on as substitute with McBride falling back.

Just on the half-hour, Hibs missed at glorious chance. Donaldson did well to block a fierce Marinello drive. The ball rebounded to Cormack. With the goal at his mercy he blasted the ball against a defender and the chance was gone.

As the interval approached, Dundee set up a sustained attack, and shots from Selway, Wilson and Steele all kept Marshall lively.

The game restarted quietly and a Wallace header from a Houston free was the only real trouble shot for the Hibs keeper. Stevenson had a good run, but his final shot was weak.

Midway through the half, Jim Steele set the fans roaring. He jinked past two defenders as easy as winking before squaring to Gordon Wallace. The centre's shot was just wide of the target.

Suddenly the game was set alight as Hibs went on a determined attack.

Stevenson, Grant and Marinello the latter after outpacing almost the entire Dundee defence were all baulked by brilliant Donaldson

Dundee fought back and Alec Bryce was again unlucky. His fierce shot was only cleared by Marshall at the second attempt. The Hibs keeper was equally hard pressed with a Wallace effort.

The Dark Blues kept up the pressure and in the 77th minute got the almost inevitable goal. Again the move stemmed from Bryce. He sent over a peach of a cross, Kinninmonth got his head to the ball and nodded it down into the path of Houston. Without ado Doug shot and left Marshall helpless from six yards. A well-earned goal.

Full of confidence, Dundee didn't slacken, and Hibs were hard pressed to prevent further goals.
