Match Report

On a bitterly cold night, with a strong wind blowing, Dundee started off with a flourish. Right away, Gordon Wallace outpaced two defenders before sending in a tremendous shot that was just inched too high.

Apart from a Coakley effort that was well held by Donaldson. Dundee, with wind advantage, continued to hold the initiative and keeper Neilsen was kept constantly in action. Dundee's forwards, however, found the wind troublesome and passes were inclined to go astray.

In 21 minutes a free kick gave Dundee the opening goal. From fully 35 yards Gordon Wallace hit it hard and true. Wind assisted, the ball simply flew into the net giving Neilsen no chance.

Morton were playing a lot of good football in midfield, but with the Dundee defence in top form the Greenock men rarely got within calling distance of Donaldson.

As the interval approached, Morton applied further pressure, and a Coakley corner caused a flutter or two before Jim Steele kicked clear.

Coakley was in action immediately on the restart, buy Donaldson brought off a fine save. Next, Jim Easton cleared off the line and then inside left Campbell tested Ally Donaldson with a high powered shot.

In 53 minutes Morton's pressure paid off. Bobby Collins started the move with a slick pass to McDerment. The wing half carried the ball before sending into the Dundee goalmouth, Joe Mason, surprisingly unmarked, had the simplest of tasks heading it into the net.

This reverse spurred Dundee to action and Billy Campbell was unlucky to see a good run come to nothing. Minutes later the wee Irishman forced a corner. His kick was cleared to Davie Johnston. The Aberdonian promptly sent a low fast shot into the goalmouth.

Right back Ferguson blocked it, but the rebound went to Gordon Wallace with his back almost turned to the goal. The centre quickly turned and hooked the ball beautifully into the net. Quick thinking - and a great goal!

Two minutes later, Gordon might have made it three, but a foul brought the move to an end. Once again Morton fought fought back. Within minutes Donaldson punched out a Morton effort at the other end Neilsen saved at Wallace's feet to deny the centre his hat-trick. The action continued from one end to the other with the spectators enjoying the entertainment in a thrilling match.
