Match Report

The Ayr defence is put under pressure straight away when Alex Bryce beat wing-half Mitchell and crossed perfectly to Jimmy Wilson. The winger's low cross just eluded Jocky Scott.

Then lan Phillip sent the ball into Ayr's defence. This time Scott collected, but his effort was cleared. desperately by McFadzean. Bryce tried a 25 yard shot which Alec bounced awkwardly for Stewart and caught the Ayr keeper in the face.

In eight minutes Dundee's effort got a reward. A Wilson cross was headed over the keeper by Gilroy. McAnespie on the line headed out straight to Wallace, whose left foot drive streaked into the net.

Dundee kept up their attack, with Alec Bryce initiating many moves. After several near things they scored again in 16 minutes. Bobby Wilson took a free on the right. He sent the ball to namesake Jim who quickly returned it to the full-back. Bobby hit it first time. Stewart dived, managed to punch the ball, but it went flying into the net.

On the half-hour mark Ayr made their first real attack. A corner from Rough beat Donaldson Ingram met the ball with his head and was most unlucky to see it scrape past the keeper's right-hand post.

In the main, however, the game was running Dundee's way. Dave Johnston came up to show Bobby Wilson he didn't have a full-back monopoly of power driven shots. Stewart did well to punch Dave's effort for corner. He did even better when a little later he stopped a Wallace shot with an outstretched foot.

Within four minutes of the restart. Stewart is an Ayr hero once again with a double save, first from Jocky Scott and then with a Wallace shot.

In 55 minutes Ayr substituted Young for Hume, but the traffic was still one way.

Keeper Stewart, however, was in superb form, and if at times he carried a bit of luck no one grudged it. Bryce, Wallace and Scott were repeatedly thwarted by him.

When a goal did come, as so often happens it was at the other end. With five minutes left Whitehead collected a pass from the right. Without ado he let go from 15 yards and Ally Donaldson was well beaten. Spurred by this out-of-the-blue goal Ayr surged forward but Dundee held out.
