Match Report

United were the first to attack. A Dave Wilson free was punched out by Donaldson to Henry, who returned the ball to Gordon. The inside man failed to control it and the danger was averted. Almost immediately Henry gave a fine pass to Kenny Cameron. Donaldson's outstretched leg prevented the centre from scoring.

It was a good start for United, but Dundee were soon at the other end and Alec Bryce and John Scott out witted the visitors' defence to leave Gordon Wallace in possession, but the centre's scoop shot went over the bar.

It was hectic end to end stuff. Davie Wilson again went close when his header hit the bar with the keeper beaten. Then, with United increasing their pressure Doug Houston assisted a partial Donaldson save by booting a Reid shot off the line.

In 31 minutes United's pressure paid off. From a throw-in move Ally Donaldson dived to push the ball away from Alan Gordon. It went to Kenny Cameron who lobbed into the net from 15 yards.

Dundee hit back and were unlucky to see a Wallace-Kinninmonth move end up with the ball being cleared off the line by Jim Cameron.

Then in 41 minutes when a Dundee goal seemed inevitable, United scored again. Rolland started the move with a great pass to Watson. The winger crossed to Gordon who gave Donaldson no chance.

Dundee started off in determined fashion after the interval and Kinninmonth was unlucky to see his effort just slip past the post. Then Dave Johnston came up to have a go.

In 59 minutes a reward for Dundee. Out on the left Steele crossed perfectly for Jocky Scott to send a well flighted ball into the corner of the net. A couple of minutes later only a brilliant McAlpine save baulked Jimmy Wilson. The fans were buzzing with excitement in this hectic game.

After Watson had twice hit the woodwork United made it 3-1 in 66 minutes. Alec Reid was the scorer from 10 yards.

The game over? Not a bit of it! Dundee staged a grandstand, setting up attack after attack. But United held on until four minutes from the end. The hard working Jim Steele cottoned on to a Bobby Wilson cross and from close range slammed the ball into the net.

And right on the whistle Steele almost did it again with a tremendous shot that brought out an equally brilliant save from McAlpine.
