Match Report

Two redheads are in the limelight as Dundee start the new season. Winger Jimmy Johnstone is expected to set up chances, and midfield maestro Gordon Strachan has been given the responsibilty of leading the club at only 21.

Big John MacPhail is missing from the defence because of suspension, and his place is taken by another newcomer, George McGeachie.

Strachan earns applause in the second minute. He controls the ball neatly onnthe edge of the penalty box and sends a right-foot lobbover keeper Brian and just over the bar. Next minute the Dundee skipper is writhing in agony on the turf, the victim of a bad tackle from behind by Airdrie captain McCulloch.

It earns the Airdrie man a long lecture from the refereeband means treatment forbStrachan.

Jimmy Johnstone bursts into the game with a mazy dribble through the middle and a perfect pass to Sin clair. The defenders concede a corner and from Johnstone's kick Sinclair heads down and Brian just manages to knock the ball away. It goes to McDougall and Brian is on his feet in time to hold the ex Ranger's shot.

Youngster McGowan heads into the Dundee net after Donaldson has been fouled and there is no score. Airdrie's McCulloch is booked in 13 minutes after a foul on Jimmy Johnstone.

Jimmy Johnstone is hurt in 17 minutes, and limps off for attention While he is off, Donaldson fails to hold a McVeigh free kick, and is lucky to see the ball bounce past the post.

Dundee go ahead with a great goal in 20 minutes. Pirie slides a free-kick to Strachan, who slips past a defender, rounds the keeper and squares the ball across goal for HUTCHINSON to touch into the net.

The lively Dens outfit goes two up three minutes later from the penalty-spot.

Sinclair is going through, when he is pushed flat on his face. Penalty taker PIRIE notches his first goal of the season. Pirie puts the ball into. the net again with a great header from a classy cross by Strachan-but he's off side.

March gets his name in the referee's book for a foul on Hutchinson. Both players need attention and the Airdrie man comes off worst. He is still limping badly as he walks to the referee to be cautioned.

Airdrie's best efforts so far is a 25-yard shot from McVeigh which is a foot too high. in 40 minutes Airdrie's big defender Jim March is sent off after sending Sinclair sprawling when the Dundee forward had gone past him.

Half-time Dundee 2, Airdrie 0.

Reflections - A fine start by Dundee. Strachan and Jimmy Johnstone are pulling the strings and Phillip, McGeaIchie and McDougall are eye catchers in a busy, hard

working outfit

Ford beats a couple of men on the touchline and slings over a high cross. Hutchinson races in to meet the ball with his head at the edge of the box and Brian moves quickly to hold the ball.

Dundee's third goal comes in 48 minutes. Jimmy Johnstone, his heels on the touch line, slings over a high cross to the near post and Pirie and 'keeper Brian go up together.

The 'keeper gets the touch, but cannot hold the ball and it bounces high enough for SINCLAIR to head into the net from a couple of yards.

The scorer signals to the dugout he is hurt and Ian Redford warms up, but it is nearly five minutes till there is a break in play and Redford can go on for Sinclair.

The flagging Airdrie side, feeling the pressure of playing with ten men, substitutes Clark for Walker. The new comer goes through cleverly and is dispossessed by Ford just before he can shoot.

Jimmy Johnstone is roaming now and is dispatching some devastating passes from midfield. One of the moves he starts ends with a Strachan shot striking the top of the bar.

Another produces another outswinging cross from Ford, which gives Hutchinson a half-chance. The shot is blocked.

In an Airdrie breakaway, which are becoming few and far between, Donaldson dives to his right to clutch a McGowan header.

A Johnstone corner is cleared to Strachan and 'keeper Brian has to move smartly to hold the Dundee skipper's cleverly-placed lob. With 10 minutes left,

Dundee send on Robinson

for McDougall. Final-Dundee 3, Airdrie 0.

Summing-Up - A solid start for Dundee who worked well. The only thing to send the fans home happier would have been more goals. But under-strength Airdrie concentrated on defence and held the door shut. Jimmy Johnstone gave every indication he will be a big attraction and a profitable player.
