Match Report

Dundee had made three changes, Ally Donaldson, Stuart Turnbull and Alex Caldwell, replacing Thomson Allan, Dave McKinnon and Dave Johnston respectively.

Johnston had been enjoying a new lease of life as sweeper. McPhail took over this role with Caldwell playing centre-half.

The crowd of nearly 20,000; approximately 5,000 from Dundee, is a record for a 'new' First Division match and the fans didn't have long to wait for a goal.

From the right Rab Prentice took the first corner and Willie Gibson had a free header at the near post to put the home side into the lead in nine minutes.

Hearts had the best of the first half exchanges, with Cammy Fraser taking time off from his unusual defensive duties to un leash his shooting power several times. His first effort went inches from 20 yards. The second, from the edge of the box rolled beyond Donaldon's right hand post while the third, a volley pro duced a great diving save from "big Ally.

Seven minutes after the restart Dundee equalised.

Sinclair headed a ball across the Hearts box to Billy Pirie who scored as Dunlop came out. Ten minutes later Hearts regained the lead. Prentice ran after a ball on the left, looked to have lost control, but managed a hard, low cross which entered the net off Caldwell's boot.

Dundee scored again, in 72 minutes Pirie well out, and with his back to the Hearts goal slipped the ball to Jocky Scott on the right who made ground before crossing to Ian McDougall in the box. The latter seemed to have lost his chance but controlled the ball before shooting under Dunlop.

Dundee could've gone on to win. Led by Jocky Scott their mid-field and forwards drew the Hearts defence well forward then lobbed balls over the top and caused problems with their pace.

On one occasion Jeffries held a high ball in the centre circle to prevent Pirie going clean through. Booked for this, the Hearts skipper was perhaps for tunate to remain on the field as twice in the first half he had been warned by referee McGinlay for over robust tackling.

Disappointing for the home side was the refusal of a penalty claim for hand ball after Dundee's sec ond equaliser.

In a game which was memo rable for its excitement, McPhail and Scott were best for Dundee while Eamonn Bannon and Rab Prentice were the Hearts stars. Despite the latter's fine game his direct opponent, 16 year-old Stuart Turnbull, making his debut for Dundee didn't let any one down in difficult circum stances.

Dundee manager, Tommy Gemmell had few worries about fielding Turnbull. In two reserve games earlier that season, Stuart had faced Prentice and contain ed the tricky winger well.

Being the visitors, a point was more acceptable to Dundee. De fensive changes and a switch in tactics, with midfield men McDougall, Williamson and Scott, lying further back, plugged some of the gaps which cost four goals against St. Johnstone in the pre vious match.

Yet with hindsight the lack of a victory that day cost Dundee pro motion. The table finished with Morton and Hearts on 58 points and Dundee one behind.
