Despite a late comeback bid by Dennis D'Arcy's Second Division men, the clear gap between the sides was always in evidence at Links Park
Dundee always looked to have something in hand and their three goals before Garry Loch finally pulled one back for the home men, clearly makes Saturday's second leg on Tayside a non-event.
The 90 minutes produced a display of five star class from visiting skipper Cammy Fraser, his contributions on dazzling right wing surges producing assists to all three of his sides goals
After McKimmie had rattled the Montrose cross bar with a powerful 30 yarder. the writing was always on the wall.
The visitors went ahead in 25 minutes. KIDD latching on to Fraser's accurate cross to hammer home a vicious 12 yard drive.
Nine minutes later the visitors went two ahead. with Fraser again much in evidence. His inch-perfect low cross was met by the forehead of the diving FERGUSON, whose effort went in off the far post.
Charles had to admit further defeat in the 52nd minute when MACDONALD rose above the home defence to nod home a Fraser corner.
Montrose lacked nothing in fighting spirit and 11 minutes from the end LOCH chested down a pass from Allan and bulleted home a glorious 22 yard consolation.
Three minutes from the end Dundee should have gone further ahead when a penalty was awarded after Neil had handled Mackie's chip. However. Ferguson's blistering spot kick was superbly palmed clear by the diving Charles.
