Match Report

Newspaper extract from The Courier.

Dundee came agonisingly close to crashing out of the Skol Cup at Stair Park as the home side matched the visitors' Premier League skills with a show of guts and determination.

It took a last-minute goal from centre-half Jim Smith to clinch a third-round place for Archie Knox's men, when he out jumped the tired part-timers' defence to head home Shannon's cross.

It was a tragedy for Stranraer, who had launched a terrific fightback after going two goals down and it was quite clear the Dens Park men hadn't recovered from Saturday's drubbing at Clydebank.

Manager Archie Knox obviously has a lot of problems to solve before Dundee become a threat to anyone this season with only the skill of Connor and the tenacity of Glennie worth reflecting on.

Dundee's lead came in circumstances that incensed the home crowd.

Full-back McGaig slipped on the edge of the box and Stephen stepped in to play a quick one two with Connor but was clearly offside when he received the midfielder's pass.

That time the flag stayed down but with the fans' criticism still ringing in his ears the stand-side linesman seemed a shade quick to raise his flag for offside when Jack headed home a Brown cross in 25 minutes.

Three minutes before the break, the visitors survived Weir's penalty protest after Connor had charged down Knox's shot. Just on half time John McCormack was foolishly booked for an off the ball incident.

After the break, Knox replaced McCormack with Harvey, whose perfectly timed cross was simply slipped home by Stephen in 55 minutes.

Filson, booked for a late tackle on Jack, made amends when he pulled a goal back for the home side in 58 minutes.

Duffy looked to be outside the box when he handled Rose's pass but referee Williamson adamantly pointed to the penalty spot and Filson made no mistake with the kick.

In 66 minutes Rafferty glided past two defenders only to see Strachan pull off a terrific point-blank save. Just before this, Archie Knox had been ordered back into the dugout by the linesman as the tempo of the game rose once again.

Stranraer sent on Lindsay for Rose and promptly moved up a gear and, after forcing five corners in five minutes, McGuire scored a sensational equaliser in 78 minutes.

The visiting defence could only clear Quinn's corner to the edge of the box where the little winger, later voted the spon- sor's man of the match, unleashed a terrific left foot shot that buried itself in the net behind Geddes.

A minute later, the Dundee keeper pulled off a fantastic save to prevent Mauchlen from putting the Stair Park side ahead.

Then came that last minute winner to bring some relief to the Dens men and see them scrape through to the next
