Match Report

A dramatic injury-time winner from ex-Dark Blue Jim Hamilton earned Dundee United a share of the spoils from this pulsating derby opener with rivals Dundee.

Just as the Tangerines looked beaten, substitute Hamilton, who started his senior career on the other side of Tannadice Street, rose to power home a Jim Paterson corner two minutes into stoppage time.

Over the piece, it was probably no less than United deserved, though Dundee will certainly feel victory was snatched away unfairly.

They will point to the fact that the fourth official had signalled only one minute of stoppage time would be played and will be less than happy that the dramatic equaliser fell 60 seconds after that time had elapsed.

The delirious United fans will not care about that - and their relief at not starting the season with a derby defeat was shown by a mini pitch invasion after the goal.

The afternoon had started well for their team and they looked set for an early lead after Dundee keeper Jamie Langfield brought down new signing Jim McIntyre.

That gave Charlie Miller a perfect opportunity, but his penalty-kick was not well struck and rebounded off the bar - the third time in a row he has missed from the spot.

The former Rangers man quickly made up for that, however, and when David Partridge crossed from the left on the half-hour mark, Miller was at the back post to net from close range.

The United joy at going ahead was short-lived and, before all their fans had returned to their seats, Dundee were level three minutes later.

And for all the flair contained within the Dens ranks, it was a route one move that did the trick.

Langfield launched a huge ball forward and, when Jim Lauchlan misjudged it, last season's top scorer Juan Sara raced through to score with a fine angled drive.

That leveller marked the period of Dundee dominance and it was no great surprise when they took the lead 11 minutes into the second half.

This time the goal was the result of a fine passing move. Steven Milne did the speed work before Alessandro Romano crossed and, when Sara headed towards goal, Gavin Rae was there to force the ball over from close range.

By then, Ivano Bonetti's team were odds on to take all three points, but plucky United had other ideas. They threw on the fit-again Paterson and, long before that dramatic end, his crossing was causing problems in the visiting box.

So, for Dundee, it was two points dropped and United a point gained. Both, as well as sharing the spoils, will also share the knowledge that improvement in several areas will be required if they are to have the kind of seasons they would like.
