Match Report

Newspaper extract from Dundee Matchday Programme .

Dundee went out of the CIS Insurance Cup at Dens despite taking an 10th minute lead through Gavin Swankie's header, losing 3-1 to Partick Thistle. Thistle equalised five minutes from half time through a Darren Brady looping shot which was either a fluke or a moment of brilliance, Brady claimed it was the latter. Thistle went ahead in 63 minutes through Billy Gibson's low shot and sealed their win with a header from Scott Boyd quarter of an hour from time.

Swankie's first competitive goal in Dundee's colours came after a Paul Dixon long throw, flicked on at the near post with the former Arbroath striker heading past Arthur. Four minutes later Swankie was again involved as the Dark Blues momentarily appeared to have eased further ahead, Dixon's early cross was met by Swankie who fired a shot across goal which was knocked home by Kevin McDonald. His joy was short lived though as assistant referee Morag Pirie raised her flag to indicate an offside in the build up.

It was an eventful first half for the man bought for the club by Dee4Life as Sives went right through him in front of the dug-outs, the Thistle man being very fortunate to escape with a telling off from the referee.

Dundee were first to most balls in the first half hour but gradually Thistle got to grips with the game and they equalised five minutes from the break after a short spell of intense pressure, A corner from the right was met by the head of Boyd and his header rattled the top of the bar before falling back into play, Thistle won back possession and worked the ball back to Brady on the edge of the box, he curled in a lovely looping shot which left Murray stranded as it nestied in the top corner of the net.

There was a flurry of chances at both ends as the second half started with an outrageous miss from Thistle's Graham Gibson in 51 minutes, he was picked out by Donnelly but fired a shot high over from close range.

Dundee hit back and five minutes later Scott Robertson lifted a ball over the defence for Gavin Swankie to chase, he steadied and fired his shot on target but straight at the advancing Arthur who saved comfortably.

Brady could have doubled his tally just before the hour when a clearance was deflected into his path, but he lifted his shot wide of the target when it seemed easier to score. A minute later Bryan Deasley was brought down on the corner of the penalty box and Paul Dixon was only just too high with his whipped free kick.

Stephen McNally replaced Ross Harris just after that effort but when another goal came it was from the Glasgow side in 63 minutes. Scott McCulloch picked up the ball from a throw in and curled in a cross which Boyd headed down for Billy Gibson to net with a low shot.

Swankie tried his luck again three minutes after that Thistle goal but his effort lacked power and Arthur gathered comfortably. The same player turned provider on 70 minutes as he went down the left and put in a low cross which Kevin McDonald was only inches from getting to before the keeper.

New boy Robert Campbell replaced Scott Robertson on 71 minutes but before he had a real chance to make an impact Dundee were another goal behind, McCulloch's 75th minute. corner finding Scott Boyd with lots of space at the back post to head powerfully home for the clincher.

At the weekend Dundee had at least enjoyed a late flurry of pressure, but here Thistle eased to victory the only late effort worthy of mention was a volley from Greg Strong which curled wide in the final minute.
