Match Report

Dundee travelled to the Highlands on Boxing Day to take on Ross County and try and record their first win over The Staggies since 2011. Dundee had one change from the side that defeated Hamilton seven days before with Nick Ross coming in for injured skipper Kevin Thomson.

Ross County kicked off the match in temperatures close to zero and had a couple of early efforts at Dundee’s goal. Murdoch headed wide from 6 yards before the same player’s shot from the edge of the box is blocked by Konrad but it was Dundee who took the lead in their first meaningful attack with a brilliantly worked goal.

County captain Andrew Davies charged forward from his own half and was stopped by a great tackle from James McPake 25 yards out. Nick Ross picked up the loose ball and fed Harkins who strode forward and squared the ball to Stewart about 25 yards out. Stewart slipped a beautifully weighted ball to HEMMINGS in the box and he fired home low into the bottom left hand corner for his tenth goal of the season.

The game continued at pace with County peppering the Dundee box with high balls, ably dealt with in the main by McPake except for one goalmouth scramble that was cleared by a combination of Bain and Holt.

Dundee were playing neat passing football and twice tried to play a slide rule pass into the County box for both Harkins and Hemmings but both times Scott Fox was alert to the danger and was off his line quick to gather.

County had a good chance to get level on 25 minutes with three quick fire chances. Firstly a Woods shot from the edge of the box was blocked before a Gardyne cut back was put behind by McPake. From the corner Robertson was unmarked at the back post but he could only head down to McPake who cleared upfield but it just delayed the equaliser.

On 29 minutes a long high ball forward by County captain Andrew Davies caught the Dark Blues’ defence flat footed and Liam BOYCE ran in and slid the ball under the advancing Bain from the edge of Dundee’s box to equalise.

County continued to push forward and three minutes later Bain had to tip away a fierce Curran drive from the edge of the box.

Harkins had a shot he fired well over before County had a great chance to take the lead. McGowan lost the ball in the midfield and Murdoch picked up the loose ball and played a neat reverse ball to Curran on the edge of the box but Konrad clipped his heels and was booked before the County man had a chance to fire at goal.

From the resultant free kick right in the middle of the goal Martin Woods’ shaved Bain’s left hand post before Martin had another shot from the edge of the box which rebounded off Bain’s chest and was cleared by McPake.

Dundee had fallen out of the game in the second part of the first half but had a good chance after to score when Kane Hemmings knocked down a Bain clearance to Stewart but he fired just wide from 18 yards.

Right on the break Irvine was booked for hauling down Michael Gardyne on County’s left and from the resultant free kick Jonathan Franks hooked his shot wide when the ball fell to him inside the D.

The sides went in level at the break and it was a slow start to the second half until Martin Woods received the ball just outside Dundee’s box and had to adjust his feet to get it onto his right before firing just wide of Bain’s left hand post.

The second half exploded into life however with three goals in seven minutes. The first saw Dundee take the lead after Greg Stewart picked the ball up just inside his own and galloped towards goal and when he reached the edge of the box, he slid the ball to his left to HEMMINGS who fired low into the net.

Two minutes later The Staggies were level when Liam Boyce played the ball into the box for GARDYNE and from a tight angle fired high into the net.

County then made a double substitution and it was one of those subs Jackson Irvine who gave County the lead. McPake had headed a Franks cross behind for a corner and when it came in IRVINE fired the ball towards goal from 12 yards and despite the efforts of Ross to clear it on the line, the assistant on the far side signalled a goal and the home crowd were celebrating.

Nine minutes later County made it four when Liam BOYCE got his second of the game when he fired home an overhead effort from a tight angle as Dundee declined as a threat.

Dundee had completely collapsed after County had equalised and their misery was compounded when Liam BOYCE completed his hat-trick with five minutes left by firing high into the net.

Scott Bain still half to make a smart double save in the dying seconds as Dundee looked a shadow of their earlier selves with County streaming forward at an alarming rate.

Dundee have struggled in the Highlands in recent times and it was the same again as The Dee went down tamely in the second half and now have two massive home games next week's to pick themselves up.
